This is a self-portrait drawn with colored pencils. I included a small part of my face as a way to be more "creative" with the composition of the portrait. While only showing part of my face, I focused more on the eye as I believe it is the key feature of this drawing. I also payed attention to the elements of art and principles of design, addressed in the prompt, while making this sketch. I wanted to emphasize the presence of sunlight, which I think is especially important during this special time, in the drawing.

I choose to use line from the Elements of Art to do my portrait. I decided to do a portrait of myself as a baby/toddler. I did this portrait from a very old photo that wasn't that clear. I choose this picture because it was taken when I was in Afghanistan, so it brings a lot of memories.

In my self-portrait, I focused on lines and contrast. Using a series of lines, I depicted my face by emphasizing my features by thickening the lines in key areas to contrast it with other areas. I had seen a similar technique used before and found it interesting, so I decided to do a study on it. Previously, I had seen this technique used in a spiral so the picture almost appeared like a record, whereas my portrait resembles more like a barcode. Like a barcode, you can get a "read" or an impression of a person by scanning their faces.

This simplified self-portrait could perhaps be interpreted to represent how currently, I find myself turning to easier solutions to my problems. Although it is something I need to address, it can be beneficial to me if it saves me time without severely interrupting my performance or demotivating me. It is also a somewhat idealized view of myself, which I often find myself thinking of when I think of my future self. This drawing will hopefully encourage me to examine myself and what I hope for the future, so I can work towards becoming a better person.

The drawing was done in pencil on sketchbook paper and then photo edited a bit, to make it clearer. The past/childhood self is turned away showing only a little of the face, which is how much of it others can see. However, it’s the most defined. The present self shows the most face, but you can’t see the whole form. And lastly, the future self is vague and shows no face at all. What they are doing reflects my interests and comforts at that time.

I used gouache and colored pencils to create this artwork, and the main principles/elements I focused on was using color to create contrast. The two side portraits contrast the middle one, adding emphasis to it. For me, this artwork was an exploration of the perception of yourself, both from others and yourself. I really enjoyed exploring different colors and textures for skin on the blue/purple portraits.

The main element I used to focus on this piece was color. Originally, I had planned to make a portrait of me in the past, present and future. But then I decided to divide the picture by color, the left as past, middle as present and the right as future. I used different colored flowers to represent my different personalities in the different times. At the bottom of the page the colors are concentrated and in their own tense, but at the top they're more mixed together. This represents growth and change, versus being made of all the different traits collectively.

This self-portrait was created in Photoshop and Illustrator. I wanted to highlight the principle of contrast and the element of color in my artwork. I did this by taking a photo of myself and using a filter in Photoshop that simplifies my features. By then using that photo as a template I made this artwork using Illustrator, blocking out only the big shapes and shadows. By assigning large swaths of myself to only a few colors, along with hard lines to create contrast rather than a gradient, I combined contrast and color to make this self-portrait feel more in depth and purposeful.

I would want people to know that my drawing is inspired by self care. It portrays a girl with flowers growing out of her and a water can showering her in love. This drawing represents how important self care is for an individual to grow and thrive. Without self care, we would die, just like a flower would die without water.
Artist: Haley F. |
For my piece I used the art element of color and the principle of contrast to make my art interesting and pop. I showed my present self my use of color in my hair to show my open mindedness and how I try to tolerate and appreciate different opinions and ways of life. I showed my past self by making my eyes really small because I used to be really naïve and I could not see everything that was in front of me. And I added smile lines around my eyes because when I grow up I want to be a happy person. I chose to leave the background white to help creat contrast and make the colors pop even more.

For this I wanted the reference picture to appear excessively tired to get the point of my mood across but also to be a bit humorous. I composed the drawing with my personal favorite tools of India ink and brush pen. I used repetition and emphasis for the most part in the piece. This is most obvious with the repetitive brush strokes that form the darker areas when they overlap and emphasize the shadow. While the piece is somewhat stylized by the brushstrokes and curved, angular lines, it’s not meant to reveal to much abstract meaning beyond the surface tone.

I typically don’t enjoy doing self portraits. To make this I decided to add my own spin on to my “past” self. I drew myself in an old west style. I got the inspiration from a photo my dad showed me when I dressed up for Halloween as a cowboy. I wanted to add emphasis to my clothes to frame my face. However, I liked to original inking.

I drew a self portrait of myself from when I was in elementary school. I was a huge fan of the Harry Potter series. I used to identify with the house Ravenclaw wich are know for being very logical people. I emphasized the blue color in the artwork because that is the color of the house.

I decided to recreate my seventh grade yearbook photo. Seventh grade is the year I imagine when I think about the past. I remember never really liked the yearbook photo. When I looked back on it I don’t remember why I thought it was so bad. I think it represents my past self and future self at the same time because of how my attitude towards it changed.

Selection Option #2, I made a gift for another friend. They are a big fan of the SCP universe, and I wanted to thank them for helping me with ideas for art! They're not the best, but I made them icons of four of their favorite SCP's. (-049, -173, -999, & -2295) I made them within the time limit of two hours, but I plan on making them a lot better!

Still going with the pencil sketch theme, I decided to draw me as an anime character (because that’s the only type of person I can draw ;-;) I’m too scared to color it in because every time I do, I feel like it leaves out details. I want to do to continue sketching and getting better with proportions.

For my self portrait, I wanted to focus on an element of art: color. I decided to paint using different shades of purple, my favorite color. I wanted the self portrait to resemble a pop art painting rather than something realistic. I used different red and blue paints to create the different shades. I used more red to create a magenta color and more blue to create a brighter periwinkle.

Since I am not one for drawing or painting faces, I decided to look back into assignment one for this piece, combining certain themes with this assignment. My first piece was heavily involved with the stars and worlds beyond our own, and I wanted to sort of combine that with one of my lifelong passions of Motorsport. The outline of this piece comes from a 2005 Formula One car, taking me back to my childhood when me and my dad would go watch the races (I lived in Indianapolis at the time). With this piece, I wanted to reflect upon a passion I will always have, and one that I have developed more recently. Motorsport will always be with me, and the stars are in my future (hopefully). In this sense, I tried to create a piece that reflected and symbolized the meanings of a unique self portrait without actually being a portrait, if that makes sense.

I chose to paint a more traditional self portrait in the sense that I did it in a photo-realistic style and didn't include any abstract concepts. However, I deviated from a traditional self portrait by using a dichromatic color scheme and incorporating the principle of contrast by using pinkish-red tones for myself and green for the background. I've never painted a portrait using only one color before, but I've been wanting to do so for a while, so this was a good opportunity for that.
Artist: Sonja R. |
When viewers look at my artwork, I would like them to appreciate the range of color I incorporated in my portrait. This element is a major part of my portrait. When I was drawing, I wanted to pick up on natural colors in the skin but make these colors more vibrant. In the end I just had a portrait with several vibrant colors. This portrait is done on toned paper with colored pencil.

I think its really important to understand that no-one really knows whats going to happen in the future. The future is completely inevitable, you cannot predict what will happen. Just like what happened with COVID-19. And the only thing you can do in a time when you're unsure of the future is just be positive. Positivity and kindness is everybody's superpower. As long as they use it in the right ways, everything will be fine. The photo that I drew my self-portrait of was me a couple months ago on a trip. I thought I had known everything and was ready for the world but as it turns out I didn't. I was just getting started.
Artist: Galina K. |
What I decided to draw for my self portrait was me in the future, graduating college. Since I wasn't able to have a proper graduation this year, I decided to draw a proper one for me in the future. I wanted to see how happy I'd be in the future, and keep that mindset for looking forward in life. I can't wait to become something I have always wanted to be since I was in elementary school. I want people to be happy and realize they have a future ahead of them.

For my self-portrait, I drew myself in two different ages. The left half of my face depicts me at around 1 year old, while the right half portrays me at my current age, 18 years old. While drawing my self-portrait, it was fun comparing the changes in my face throughout the years. I focused on value as my primary element of art. Using my pencil, I shaded the contours of my face to add shadows and contrast.

A couple days ago, while face-timing with a friend, we landed on memory lane and I made a big deal about why she didn’t wear a dress for our middle school promotion, emphasizing it was a once-in-a-lifetime ceremony. Then, she replied with an answer which made a deep impression on me, saying “ well technically everyday is special then because there are no repeats of one day!” During this repetative quarantine period, a part of me forgot how each day holds value, and I often found myself wasting precious time on trivial things, procrastinating school work or ignoring hobbies I enjoy. Soon night came earlier than expected, and the vicious cycle seemed to grow more and more into my daily life. I chose to implement themes from both option #1 and #2, because I believe the symbolization of sakura blossoms represents both: a time of renewal( the meaning behind these traditional flowers), a time of forgiving and learning from your past mistakes( self-care), all which I think honestly is a good manifestation of “me”(a different way of portraying a “self-portrait”). When I think of myself, rather than focusing on physical attributes, I think of how I’ve grown from the past, and I truly believe the idea of “a time of renewal” really illustrates the beautiful human nature that we are constantly growing stronger in any stages of life!

For this piece I originally planned on creating a more traditional self-portrait and highlighting some elements and principals. However, when I had to choose to reflect on past, present or future, I decided to take the less traditional route and try to draw more self perception than physical appearance. I decided to highlight contrast and value by using the laptop light as my light source and trying to highlight the contrast that it (as a lone light source) would create. I also did not initially plan on drawing the desk, however i decided to reflect on present self it seemed fitting. I the past month or so, I spend most of my time at my desk (almost to the point that it may as well be an extension of self) so I thought it would be a must have for this drawing.

For my self - portrait I chose to do a drawing of me playing soccer. This shows myself currently because everyday I am practicing soccer waiting for quarantine to be over so I can play in games again. In my drawing I used an Element of Art by using color and a Principle of Design by showing movement. I decided to draw a picture of me playing soccer over anything else in my life that I do a lot because it is what I want to do in the future and what I have been doing in my past. Through my self - portrait hopefully I am showing the viewer part of my personality and appearance in that I am very sporty and athletic.

In my self portrait I focused on color and line for the element of art and contrast for the principle of design. The background was the most important part of it for me to show the contrast between my past and present self. The left side of my portrait shows my past self that was more crazy and outgoing and the right side shows more of my present self that is more calm and reserved. It also shows what I want my future self to be more like, with both sides not just one.

This was truly my favorite assignment. Although, I am not very good at drawing people, I tried my best to incorporate emphasis, value, and balance. I decided to put my own spin on this assignment. I wrote some characteristics that I think people see in me and then I crossed them out. I then wrote traits that I want others to perceive me as. It is so much more fun to see your own beauty than to tear yourself down, which is what I did in this assignment. I was intimidated when I first saw it was a self portrait, but it was a fun assignment. I hope that viewers try this themselves even if they are not good artists. It is easy to live a life of self-deprecation, but I tried to compliment myself with this assignment. I hope that is okay :)

My self portrait is original because i used beads to create a face and i used vibrant colors to contrast against the white background. I also used a lot of lines to shape the face and it’s features. I really enjoyed creating this because putting the beads down was very relaxing and fun to do. The beads are some of my favorite colors and i feel like they make each other stand out.

What I'd want my viewers to know about my artwork while their looking at it is it's a more traditional self-portrait. I mainly focused on the face and used pencil/colored pencils. I decided to emphasis the principle of design: contrast. I did this by doing one half with no emotion or color and the other side with a smiling version (of me) with color. So, overall the moods of the two sides are opposites, or contrasting.

My artwork this week included elements from the zentangle angle unit as well as a personal element. I recently moved houses, and my old one had a row of flowers that lead up to the garage. The flowers were all roses except for one bush that was very last. I tried replicating the colors from memory and from pictures, and then added a black background with some zentangle patterns. We found some colored pencils, which made it easier for me to combine colors.

My art piece is a self portrait of my present self and uses value to help use lightness and darkness to create shading. The place where the self portrait was made was outside in the morning to help give the drawing good lighting. To get shading I overlapped lines to make areas darker and lighter. For the lightest part of self portrait i did not use any shading and just used the original color of the paper to get the lightest color. In the end the use of value and shading allowed my art piece to become more realistic.

In my self-portrait, I wanted to include several things. This focuses a lot on my "present self." Currently, we are all in quarantine. In the drawing, I am glancing outside at the window, which shows the world. It is supposed to signify how I feel trapped inside my house, and can only watch what happens to the world on the inside. While I and the world are in color, everything else is not; I am presenting the bleak feeling I have. The kanji on me says "lonely" and "quiet," reflecting my past and present self. I chose to focus on Contrast in this self-portrait, which is shown through the colors used.

In my self portrait I used a picture of myself from a few months ago. I tried to make it as simplistic and realistic as I could. In my artwork I used the element of art: line. I used the element line in the whole piece, using some smaller lines and some larger and darker lines. I also used some shorter lines and some longer lines to convey the texture when I drew my hair.
Artist: Emma C. |
I wanted to explore the “non-traditional” aspect of this assignment, so I worked off a photo of myself but added a few surreal details. I also focused on the principle of movement with the hair moving down but the vines moving up to bring the attention to the face. I’ve found myself becoming more interested and invested in the plants I started growing since quarantine started and I thought it seemed appropriate for this piece. I had fun playing with shadows and light and I think I would enjoy doing another portrait sometime.

In my drawing I drew myself, and focused on the shape element of art. This element was a little difficult to draw myself accurately with, since we are not made of shapes. My head is the shape of a heptagon, or 7 sides. My eyes are made of thinner hexagons, with an oval and a smaller circle to represent my eyes. My nose is an incomplete triangle, with circles as the nostrils. My top lip is an irregular pentagon, while the bottom is half of an oval. My ears are a rhombus, with another one inside. My hair is an irregular shape, with a wave shapes in it. My neck has a circle and two rectangles next to it to show an adams apple.
Artist: Chris D. |
In my drawing I drew myself the same as the present myself, which means there is nothing special in my face. But in the background, I have incorporated many future ideas about myself. For example the rose, that rose means that I want myself to be more girly more open to my friends and family. Since I dressed up really hype beast, I personally don't think so but most of the people called me that so in future, I would like to be more girly in appearance. And the bubbles below my face represents to be more enthusiastic cause as I see bubbles I just felt really happy which I would like people when they saw me, they could be very happy and think that I am an enthusiastic person. The straight lines in the top of the drawing means long-lasting, persistent which I wish myself to be in future. I have used many drawing techniques in this artwork, for example, there is texture because I represented things really looked at they have their own texture and looks reality. I also has smooth because I have drew my hair in smooth lines. Also, I have normal lines and shapes in my drawing.

For this assignment I decided to go back to assignment number one and draw something that has been really challenging for me lately. There are many things that I’ve been struggling with during this quarantine, but the main one is focusing. Being at home all day gives me access to things I usually don’t have at school when I’m studying. These things include my volleyballs, access to social media and games, and television. Because of these things, I have had trouble focusing on my homework and getting it done. When people look at my drawings, I want them to think about the things that may be troubling or challenging for themselves. I want them to know that there are also other people who are struggling too and that it’s ok to feel this way.

This was cool to draw although I think I am a lot cuter than my drawing 🥺 haha. Anyways I had me but then I wanted to incorporate the past present and future so I decided to put a ox on left, for past, a flower above me , for present and a book to the right for the future. I chose an ox to symbolize my past because I was as stubborn as an ox. I chose a flower for present because I am all loving and vibing at the moment. Lastly, I chose the book for the future because I want to be more knowledgeable. I just realized that you have to work for the future you want, so sometime I’ll have to actually make myself more knowledgeable in the present if that makes sense. I’ll have to change my present o change my future.

In this picture you see me sitting down in the sky with stars and planets. I really like the space and stars and idea that there’s miles and miles of sky that’s unexplored. Just the idea of half stars are made there’s so many planets that have different things so amazing. The sky was an inspiration to this picture. And it was fun doing a self portrait because it was a new perspective.
Artist: Mia L. |
This time I decided not to do the self portrait. Instead I decided to focus on a drawing about what I’ve been doing since quarantine started. Previously I talked about playing video games, using charcoal in my sketches now, and watching movies and tv shows. This piece is a conglomeration of all of these. It depicts a Clone Trooper from Star Wars. In 2018 Disney announced the continuation of the Tv series Clone wars, which was cancelled back in 2014. So yo celebrate I watched all seven seasons as well as Star Wars episodes 1, 2 and 3. Spending quarantine like this has really made the isolation a bit easier especially since a couple of my friends enjoyed the show just as I did.

I mainly used the principle of design, contrast in my self-portrait. I used contrast to outline facial features and shaded darker to show depth. I also used value to show the curves and dimensions of my face. I chose to draw my past self because I wanted to be reminded of who I was and how I changed up until now. I also chose to draw myself like this to be reminded of my dream of becoming a doctor.
Artist: Darius Y. |
I picked option 2. Something I've been doing differently is something to help me stay sane during quarantine. Recently I have been going on my balcony at night and just looking at the night sky. This helps me stay calm and looking at the stars is a good way to pass time and get fresh air. It is peaceful too.
Artist: Anonymous |
I chose the second option once again, I love drawing different people and characters of mine instead of myself, this shows a slight combination of assignment one, it shows how I feel which is lonely and in need of cuddles but its also a drawing for someone I love because they can make me feel safe and sound like cuddles make some people feel.
Artist: Nadia S. |
This is non-traditional self portrait I created. It shows my back, unlike most self portrait. I'm looking at a screen that demonstrates my past, present, and future selves. In the past, I played a lot of games and with many toys, not really caring much about anything I did. Now, I am mostly focused on getting through school to get educated, which will help my future self be successful and happy. On this drawing, I worked on the element of value, and tried to utilize shading.
Artist: Evan Z. |
I’d want people to know although I’m not the best artist, the main thing I want people to capture from this drawing is the essence of me. It doesn’t look exactly like me. It doesn’t have exact details that can help you distinctly see that it’s me. Though, it resembles me. The essence of me is in this drawing.
